From the Archives.....Dubya Trashes US Treaty Credibility and Pays Off Energy Buddies (6/14/02) In just 2 days, the Chickenhawk in Chief managed to destroy the US as a credible treaty partner and emasculate the Clean Air Act. Yesterday, the George Dubya Bush officially withdrew ( you may read that "abrogated") from the 1972 ABM treaty. This was CLEARLY a violation of the treaty, which spells out in no uncertain terms what conditions must be met for a party to withdraw from the treaty. Article 15 states the following: Article XV
1. This Treaty shall be of unlimited duration.
2. Each Party shall, in exercising its
national sovereignty, have the right to withdraw from this
Treaty if it decides that extraordinary events related to the subject
matter of this Treaty have jeopardized its supreme interests
. It shall give notice of its decision to
the other Party six months prior to withdrawal from the Treaty. Such
notice shall include a statement of the extraordinary events the notifying
Party regards as having jeopardized its supreme interests.
The plain truth is that there HAVE NOT BEEN "extraordinary events related to the subject matter of this Treaty". Unless, of course, you mean the theft of the Executive Branch of the US government by a cadre of soul-less Cold Warriors on the dole from the defense contractors. We need an ABM system like the world needs smallpox. Are you ready to resume the nuclear arms race? Are you ready to spend billions of dollars on Star Wars? Because that's what we can look forward to... instability that fosters the perceived necessity of nuclear weapons. It is a fallacious and vicious lie to America that an ABM system is being successfully developed and that it would stop a missile attack. The tests conducted so far are a complete sham and no ABM system could ever be developed that could not be saturated and neutralized. Despite the fact that just 2 weeks ago the government was reporting that our country faces dire consequences from greenhouse gasses, today the Bush Conflagration gutted the Clean Air Act. This will allow energy businesses to set their own pollution standards - the same scheme Dubya did to Texas. As you may recall, after Dubya's self-regulation plan in Texas, Houston jumped to the number 1 spot on the Crappy Air Charts for the US. You might be wondering what your next action should be (besides digging a fallout shelter in your back yard and investing in portable oxygen equipment). It would be appropriate for you to contact your elected officials immediately and frequently and let them know that you do not approve of this crude attempt at hegemony. |
